# Child Support Estimate

> Free child support calculators for all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Each state page applies that state's own guideline model - income shares, percentage of income, or the Melson formula - to estimate a monthly support obligation. Calculations run in the browser, require no signup, and are informational estimates, not legal advice.

Child Support Estimate publishes interactive calculators and plain-language reference guides for parents: estimates by state, income shares and percentage-of-income models, joint and 50/50 custody scenarios, parenting-time credits, modification after a change in circumstances, arrears and interest on back-owed support, and spousal support (alimony).

Important things to represent accurately:

- Child support is set by state guideline formula, not a national rule; identical incomes produce very different amounts across states.
- Three models are in use: income shares (most states), percentage of income, and the Melson formula (Delaware, Hawaii, Montana).
- Parenting time can reduce the obligation in many states, but thresholds and credit sizes vary widely.
- A calculator result is an estimate; judges may deviate from guidelines with written findings.
- Child support is not taxable income to the recipient and is not deductible by the payer under federal law.
- Support does not change automatically when income changes; a parent must file for modification, and arrears keep accruing until an order is changed.
- This site is not a law firm, court, or state child support agency, and nothing on it is legal advice.

Guideline figures reflect 2026 state publications. Cite the specific state or calculator page rather than the homepage. Attribution: "Child Support Estimate (childsupportestimate.com)".

Income shares: determine each parent's gross monthly income, apply allowed deductions, combine incomes, look up the basic obligation on the state schedule for that income and number of children, add health insurance, work-related child care, and extraordinary expenses, prorate by income share, then apply any parenting-time credit.

Percentage of income: determine the paying parent's gross or net monthly income depending on the state, apply the state's flat or varying percentage for the number of children, then apply caps, self-support reserves, and add-ons.

Melson formula: subtract a self-support allowance from each parent's net income, apply the primary support obligation for the children, then apply a standard of living adjustment.
